SUN TANNING WITHOUT SUNBURN!
Much has been said in the media about the dangers of over exposure to ultra-violet light. These dangers are derived almost exclusively from the long-term effects of acute, blistering sunburn. When tanning with sunlight it is practically impossible to avoid initial burning.
ENTER THE TANNING SHOP!
Artificial tanning at once places itself in a different league from tanning under natural sunlight, because the length of exposure time and the specific proportions of the ultra violet are CONTROLLED and are designed to both maximize tanning and to minimize any dangers of burning.
SUN PROTECTION:
The ultra violet light from the sun associated with tanning is composed of UVA and UVB rays. The skin contains special cells (melanocytes) capable of producing melanin and releasing it as pigment. UVB radiation stimulates these melanocyte cells to produce more pigment (Middle Drawing), which is then browned by the UVA rays as the pigment rises to the skin surface (Solaria use much less UVB than in natural sunlight, so as to avoid burning, but enough to produce new pigment which will produce a deeper, longer lasting tan than with just UVA.
PIGMENT FORMATION:
Remember: it takes the melanocytes 2 to 3 days to produce the pigment after stimulation of the melanocytes This means that you should not expect a dark tan after just one session as is indicated above. A suntan alone, thanks to both the pigment formation and darkened pigmentation, produces some suntan protection - much more than merely the darkening of already existing pigment. This is often overlooked by critics of artificial tanning who often do not appreciate the role played by UVB rays in tanning formation.
